I was stationed on the Simon Lake when she went to Holy Loch in 87. I was in M-Division and served in the S-9 division short time. I got on board in Kings Bay at the end of an overhaul. We left Kings Bay and went to Charleston. We completed a REFTRE in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After passing our REFTRE, we returned to Charleston. After a couple of weeks, we did a weapons onload in Goose Creek and left for Holy Loch. I believe it was the Hunley that we relieved. The Simon Lake was called the "Lady of the Loch" while stationed in Scotland. I think it was in 88 that we cruised to Brest, France. I was truly sorry to hear that she is going to be decomissioned. One of my most vivid memories of Scotland is of the Sunday night "cattle boats" (ferries from Greenock) that carried women going to the enlisted mans club. I left the Lake in 89. |
