I was stationed on the Howard W. Gilmore from June 69 to June of 70.The Gilmore underwent an overhaul in the Charleston Naval Shipyard from June to Sept 1969. After overhaul, a shakedown cruise was made to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which we were subjected to very heavy seas on the way to Cuba, as a hurricane had crossed in front of our path. The Howard W. Gilmore was in Charleston, SC until June of 1970, at which time it was deployed to Key West, Florida. The Gilmore's duties were relieved by the USS Orion, AS-18, of which had come from Norfolk, Va. Hope this helps fill in your missing history, seeing the Gilmore and Orion on your web site brings back many fond memories of my four years in the navy. Charles P.
