Please note - due to a recent "hacking" incident -
entries between August 2008 and December 2011 were lost.
Unfortunately- every effort to recover the lost entries was unsuccessful
as even the backup files were corrupted beyond repair. Fortunately an off-site
backup of the earlier entries was available and is here. We regret this loss.

Comments:

After finishing Boot camp, and OM "A" school at the Lakes, I was assigned to the Dixon Pre-com crew in Jan 1971. After our training in San Diego, we were flown to Norfolk to begin getting the ship ready for sea trials. After sea trials, we commissioned her, and made the trip through the canal, with a few stops like San Juan, Balboa, and Acapulco. Needless to say, I learned a lot of things that weren't taught to a farmboy from N.H. on that trip! After reaching San Diego, we went through the tediousness of fleet training, and finally tied up at Ballast Point and began our job of tending Subs. I was assigned to the Optical shop, R-5 Div, where we repaired Sub Periscopes, and optical equipment. I stayed on the Dixon untill May of 1975, and was transferred to the Dixie, AD 14, untill my discharge in June 1976. I had many memorable experiences onboard the Dixon, and during the summer of 1988, I was working on a commercial fishing boat off the coast of Washington, and watched the Dixon sail past. Having served aboard the USS Proteus from 1962-63, and just finished reading the entire Proteus story, my memories have been awoken. What a great job you guys did! I'm curious to know if there is any way to purchase USS Proteus AS-19 hats or other paraphernalia. Jeff Putz, Data Processing Tech 2nd Class.

Canopus

Comments:

I was on the Canopus from 1991-1993, shortly before it was decommissioned. Because I was the CMC's Yeoman, I was aware of much of the history of the ship. Also, I served shortly after the ship had arrived in King's Bay, Georgia. The history that you are missing belongs in Holy Loch, Scotland. The ship was a sister to the USS Simon Lake. We not only replaced the Simon Lake in King's Bay but had replaced her in Holy Loch, as well. The ship came to King's Bay directly from Baltimore in 1990, where it had received a complete refit. Prior to that it had been in Holy Loch since 1984, with the exception of a short stint in Guam. In 1992, the ship received a partial refit in our home port of King's Bay to allow us to service more Boomers, in more than one port. We sailed from King's Bay to Norfolk on and off in 1992 and 1993 trying to replace the 3 Tenders that had already been decommissioned. In 1993 it was announced that we to would decom. The ship was actually decommissioned in King's Bay not in Norfolk. She never left King's Bay under her own power, again. She was towed out of King's Bay in 1994, after decommissioning. I do not know whether or not you have access to USN personnel but a good person for history on the Canopus is ET1(SW) Larry T. Holland. He was the only person I knew who was on the ship in King's Bay, Holy Loch and Guam. I hope this helps to feel in some missing data. I cherish the time I spent on her and was sad to see her go. Thanks for the memories...Chelsea A. Edmonds

Comments:

I reported aboard the Orion right out of boot camp in 1965, I worked in the crews barber shop and also the Officers barber shop. I had some real good times on the Orion and have good memories of her. I try to make as many reunions as my time permits and was in Norfolk when she was decommissioned in 1993. I left the Orion in 1967 when I was transfered to the sub base in Holy Loch Scotland. I would like to hear from any former shipmates.Don Brewer.

I am interested in acquiring a copy of a photo, digital or otherwise. It is a photo of the USS PROTEUS in Tokyo Harbor at the signing of the Japanese surrender. This photo was mounted on the outside of the wardroom (at least it was in 1991-1992). This awesome photo was a standard 8" high, but about 30" wide. 52 (yes, fifty two) submarines were moored alongside (26 each side) to commemorate the 52 subs lost in WWII. Comments:

I was stationed aboard the Proteus from December of 1977 through her return from her overhaul in Long Beach to Guam in May of 1980, and I have since renewed my interest in her whereabouts. I stumbled upon your site while surfing one day and I just want you to know that your site, while it stirred me to no end, almost brought tears to my eyes. I never would have imagined that a ship once so proud could be brought to such a sad and humble end. I do on the other hand realize that she did continue to serve our great Navy in whatever way the "higher-ups" deemed necessary. It just isn't the way I picture her in my mind, i'll always know the "pro" to be a vital and important part of my life. She meant a great deal to me in the terms of my growing and maturing into a responsible human being. All my fellow shipmates should know that she did serve a proud and valiant tour, right to the last day. I will always feel that her crews, both before me and after me, are my shipmates, now and forever. The feeling of exhiliration that overcomes me when I think about the times that we shared as mates is inexplicable. I'm sure you can relate. I will always look upon her memory with great love and admiration. I am sorry to say that I have not been able to locate or contact any of the "guys" I served with and maybe you might be able to assist me in that endeavour. I was a Storekeeper, learned my trade that I still to this day ply. I would also like you to know that when we returned to Guam in 1980, I and a number of my friends crossdecked to the Hunley for the return trip to Charleston. John E. Wallace

USS Bushnell

Comments:

I served on The AS15 USS Bushnell from 1960 to 1963. I was a Navy Draftsman(one of 200 or so.) She was in Key West at the time, we made a couple of jaunts at sea. One to New Orleans and One to Jamaica in the Carib. In 1962 or 1961 the Presedent -- then John F. Kennedy -- was to pay the Naval Base in Key West a vist. I think this was at the beginning of the missle crisis in Cuba. There was no presedential flag on the base or any of the ships in port. The Admiral came to Bushnell and asked if we could help. We had a group of draftsman on board (5) and we set out to create a Presedential flag. The group stayed up all night drawing and painting on cloth to create this flag to fly for the President the next day. Well the next day came and we raised the flag, it rained and the flag of course blurred. To this day I do not think John F. Even saw it. We all got accomadations into our records for this one. Bob St. Jean US NAVY draftsman third class.
