Entries are display most recent first.

Please note - due to a recent "hacking" incident -
entries between August 2008 and December 2011 were lost.
Unfortunately- every effort to recover the lost entries was unsuccessful
as even the backup files were corrupted beyond repair. Fortunately an off-site
backup of the earlier entries was available and is here. We regret this loss.

Just got back from the AS33 Decommissioning ceremony. It was a very nice ceremony. The Admirals still talk too much though. But over all it was good to see her again. Jim Taylor

Tender:

Howard W. Gilmore

Comments:

I was stationed on the Howard W. Gilmore from June 69 to June of 70.The Gilmore underwent an overhaul in the Charleston Naval Shipyard from June to Sept 1969. After overhaul, a shakedown cruise was made to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which we were subjected to very heavy seas on the way to Cuba, as a hurricane had crossed in front of our path. The Howard W. Gilmore was in Charleston, SC until June of 1970, at which time it was deployed to Key West, Florida. The Gilmore's duties were relieved by the USS Orion, AS-18, of which had come from Norfolk, Va. Hope this helps fill in your missing history, seeing the Gilmore and Orion on your web site brings back many fond memories of my four years in the navy. Charles P. Behrent, Former Instrumentman 2nd class

Simon Lake

Comments:

I was stationed on the Simon Lake when she went to Holy Loch in 87. I was in M-Division and served in the S-9 division short time. I got on board in Kings Bay at the end of an overhaul. We left Kings Bay and went to Charleston. We completed a REFTRE in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. After passing our REFTRE, we returned to Charleston. After a couple of weeks, we did a weapons onload in Goose Creek and left for Holy Loch. I believe it was the Hunley that we relieved. The Simon Lake was called the "Lady of the Loch" while stationed in Scotland. I think it was in 88 that we cruised to Brest, France. I was truly sorry to hear that she is going to be decomissioned. One of my most vivid memories of Scotland is of the Sunday night "cattle boats" (ferries from Greenock) that carried women going to the enlisted mans club. I left the Lake in 89.
