Entries are display most recent first.

Please note - due to a recent "hacking" incident -
entries between August 2008 and December 2011 were lost.
Unfortunately- every effort to recover the lost entries was unsuccessful
as even the backup files were corrupted beyond repair. Fortunately an off-site
backup of the earlier entries was available and is here. We regret this loss.

Tender:

USS Simon Lake

Comments:

I spent a little bit of time attached to USS Simon Lake (AS31) over in La Maddalena, working in R10, the Nuclear Repair division. Actually it consisted of 38N, Nuclear Repair and 10D, Nuclear Planning. Just so you can update your page of repair shops on a tender.

Name:

Bob Ennis

Tender:

Proteus

Comments:

I served aboard the Proteus from June 1960-June 1963 when I was discharged from her. Many a night I spent, as an MT striker, doing fire watches while the plug section was secured. My time on the Proteus was probably the most rewarding life experience (other than family) I ever had. We still have friends in Scotland that visit us and we them. Bob Ennis

Just got back from the AS33 Decommissioning ceremony. It was a very nice ceremony. The Admirals still talk too much though. But over all it was good to see her again. Jim Taylor

Name:

Charles P. Behrent

Tender:

Howard W. Gilmore

Comments:

I was stationed on the Howard W. Gilmore from June 69 to June of 70.The Gilmore underwent an overhaul in the Charleston Naval Shipyard from June to Sept 1969. After overhaul, a shakedown cruise was made to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, which we were subjected to very heavy seas on the way to Cuba, as a hurricane had crossed in front of our path. The Howard W. Gilmore was in Charleston, SC until June of 1970, at which time it was deployed to Key West, Florida. The Gilmore's duties were relieved by the USS Orion, AS-18, of which had come from Norfolk, Va. Hope this helps fill in your missing history, seeing the Gilmore and Orion on your web site brings back many fond memories of my four years in the navy. Charles P. Behrent, Former Instrumentman 2nd class
